Why Today’s Swimming Pool Pumps Are Up To The Job

Let’s face it, swimming pool pumps are expensive. And you can’t really get away from having one. Filter systems, certain pool cleaners, in-built jacuzzi jets, and other components need one to function.

Fortunately, it’s an investment that – these days – you only need to make once. A good pool pump will last the lifetime of your pool and beyond. Many other parts – the filters, the paint, even the material itself – will often breakdown before your pump gives out. The materials from which contemporary pool pumps are manufactured makes them highly corrosion resistant.

Modern swimming pool pumps are also much more energy efficient than their ancestors. That means you can keep your water filtered or heated for relatively much less than it would have cost you in the past, even considering today’s higher electricity rates.

Current pump designs also offer much easier maintenance, in the cases when that’s even required. See-through strainer covers, large debris baskets, and simple-to-use lids make cleaning a breeze.

Pumps are also now much hardier. Winter temperatures in certain areas almost guarantee some freezing. Yet Spring and Summer are so warm that lots of people will still want a swimming pool. That change is tough on a pump. Seals can get stiff, oils dry up, and trapped water can produce high pressures.

But modern pool pumps are up to the job. Special materials have made cracked rubber from sharp temperature changes a thing of the past. Special oils make it very unlikely that you’ll have to do much more than check them.

Low temperatures are rarely a problem these days for pools pumps. Freezing water doesn’t actually crack a part very often due to expansion. More often, it plugs up a section, raising the air pressure to dangerous levels.

But a good pump will provide in-built drainage to minimize collection and retention of water that can later freeze. At the same time, super strong materials make it very hard to break a part. For extreme conditions, a little non-toxic anti-freeze can solve the problem before it happens.

Pumps that offer 2-speed operation are another valuable feature. Low speeds provide the best savings on electricity and extend times between maintenance. High-speeds are helpful for clearing out or heating your pool after opening or on windy days.

Pumps aren’t just for in-ground pools these days, either. Above ground pools often now have filters, heaters, and other systems that operate off pump pressure. Yet these lightweight, weather-proof designs require no special housing around the pump. They’re as easy to maintain and long lasting as a pump for an in-ground pool.

When you have to install or replace your swimming pool pump, shop around and get the highest quality possible. It’s something you only want to have to do once at most. With the right pool pump, that’s certainly possible.
