Swimming Pool Covers – Prevention is Worth Ten Times a Cure

November 9, 2008 by admin

Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, whatever the season … swimming pool covers are a major aid in maintaining your pool in top condition.

♦ Summer

Ah, Summer. That’s when the pool gets used the most. Then the need for a good cover becomes all the more important. Extra use means extra hassle if you have to struggle to get your pool open and closed. A great roller and reel system can make the whole effort a breeze. An automated system makes it even more so.

♦ Fall

Fall brings falling leaves that turn your pool into a pond. They bring bugs, bacteria and dirt with them. They can clog up a filter. They can also encourage the growth of algae. Algae rest on them and the leaves also provide shade that encourages the growth of certain species.

Keeping leaves out of the pool can become a maintenance headache. Skimming is no fun! You’ve got better things to do with your time. Automatic cleaners help, but leaves can fill them up fast or clog the hose. Prevention is worth ten times a cure. Fortunately that’s easy with an easy-to-deploy pool cover. Leaves are just blown off the surface or are easily discarded when you roll up the cover.

♦ Winter

Winter in some locations brings lots of rain, in others lots of snow. Rain carries dirt from the skies and deposits it in the pool. It also carries air-borne algae that winds up right in the water. Snow and cold temperatures can freeze pipes and break plastic filters. Keeping the pool covered can help reduce both those problems.

♦ Spring

Spring is the season of new life. Unfortunately, much of that new life is in the form of bacteria, fungi, algae, and thousands of insect species. A pool cover will help keep those nasty critters out of your water and therefore off swimmers who use the swimming pool.

Spring can also be very rainy in certain areas, so a pool cover performs the same service talked about above. A pool cover also prevents overflowing the pool, which would lead to slippery decks. Overflowing also deposits dirt and other material that would otherwise wind up in the filter system where it could be easily disposed of.

Swimming pool covers come in all shapes, sizes, and materials for every need. Solar pool covers are increasingly popular as the price of electricity continues to go up and up. Designer pool covers add a bit of flair to the pool. Pool mesh covers are a great way to keep the water surface open but still trap those leaves.

All those types and more are available for above ground or in ground pools.

An above ground pool is especially vulnerable because they tend not to have DE or sand filter systems, and sometimes not even a cartridge. Many owners won’t bother with an automatic robot cleaner for an above ground pool.

But in-ground pools need year ’round protection, too. They tend to be larger, so a solar blanket can reduce heating costs by as much as 75%. They require more chemicals, which are costly. But that can be reduced with a good cover because it lowers evaporation and burn-off from sunlight.

Keep your costs lower and your pool healthier while you minimize your maintenance effort. Buy a pool cover.
